Sports Programs
The Department offers a variety of recreational sports programs for the whole community. Sports clubs are organized in a number of sports, including basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and table tennis. These clubs determine practice and competition schedules and provide their own coaching from among club members. Leagues for each of these sports are sometimes organized during the year.
Also available is family rock climbing, offered by Mike McKay on Saturday mornings from 10:00–noon. The children climb and the parents control the safety ropes from below.
In addition, the Recreation Center will now be open in the mornings from 9:30–11:45 for tennis, indoor walking or running, and weight lifting. Tennis instruction will be offered 9:30-11:30 a.m. by Kyle Cleveland, a USTA certified tennis teacher, Maharishi School graduate, and state high school tennis champion. (Phone 472-1033.) The tennis courts are now being used to host USTA league tennis matches. Two such events have already been held, and a third will be held this month. University and area tennis players compete, as well as players from Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Des Moines.
Other Activities
A variety of other recreational activities (on and off campus) are also available to the community, including: aerobics, camping, cross-country skiing, golf, horseback riding, roller-skating, frisbee-golf, swimming, and windsurfing.
For students eager for outdoor adventure, the Department offers one- to three-day excursions on weekends between academic blocks. These exhilarating, professionally supervised adventures include activities such as alpine skiing, rock climbing in the scenic rock parks of the midwest, kayaking the Wolf River’s white water, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, long canoe trips, or sailboarding the wide lakes of the Midwest.
