How to Apply

Students of the University

The steps for applying to the Accounting Professionals MBA Program are:

  1. Carefully read the admission requirements
  2. Complete and submit the Preliminary Assessment form
  3. If you receive preliminary approval, you will be given instructions on how to apply online for final acceptance.
  4. Do not send any transcripts, recommendations, etc. to us before you are notified of your preliminary status.

Applicants are notified by email for each step of the admission process. Due to international time differences, we recommend that you correspond with the Admissions Office through email at accmba@mum.edu.

  • When your application is complete, it is reviewed by the Accounting MBA Program Director. If you meet program requirements, the Accounting MBA Director will arrange a telephone interview with you.
  • If you pass the interview, you will receive academic approval from the program director.
  • After “academic approval” is obtained, your application will be transferred to the Office of International Admissions for final approval. You will then be provided with a checklist of documents required for an I-20, which is a document needed to obtain an F-1 visa (student status visa).
  • The I-20 is sent via courier mail. You will be notified about the date of mailing and document tracking information.
  • After receiving the I-20, the applicant can arrange a student visa interview with the U.S. embassy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of visa is issued to candidates from other countries? If you are from a country other than the U.S., you will apply for an F-1 student visa as a graduate-level student. This visa permits you to study in the U.S. After you receive an approval from both the program director and the Office of Admissions, we will send you an I-20 form.

How far in advance should an applicant apply to the Accounting Professionals MBA Program? We have no formal application deadlines, but we strongly recommend that you apply early. The time required to obtain an F-1 student visa varies in each country. You should contact the U.S. Embassy closest to your city of residence to check on F-1 visa application procedures and interview wait time.

What documents are needed for the online formal application? You will be given instructions by the Admissions Office about what documents to provide. Some of the documents you will need are: University transcripts (not secondary school), CV (resumé), passport copies, and supervisor/faculty recommendations. You should only send the documents that are specifically requested by your admissions representative.

How long does it normally take for the University to complete and approve an application? The period of time it takes to process an application depends greatly on the candidate’s ability to supply the required documents in a timely manner. The total elapsed time from the date that you apply online until the date you receive an I-20 document can be 1–3 months.

What happens if an applicant does not attend the term admitted for? You may request by email to accmba@mum.edu to have your application for admissions deferred to the next entry date. There will not be any additional fee charged for this service. However, because acceptance criteria are subject to change, applicants who are accepted for one entry date may not automatically be accepted for a future entry date.

How can an applicant improve the chances for acceptance into the Accounting MBA program? Applicants who do not pass the telephone interview with the Accounting MBA Director usually fail due to poor English or a weak understanding of double-entry book keeping according to USA standards. To prepare for the interview, applicants can do the following:

  • Study an American textbook in financial accounting
  • Learn the basic functionality of Excel, Access, and PowerPoint software programs
  • Get acquainted with computerized accounting systems such as Peachtree or QuickBooks
  • Study conversational and written English at an American Language Center

How can an applicant prepare for the telephone interview with the Accounting MBA director? You may need to study (or review) the American system of double-entry book keeping and Excel spreadsheets. One of the best textbooks for financial and managerial accounting is:

Williams, Jan R., Haka, Susan F., Bettner, Mark S. and Robert F. Meigs, Financial and Managerial Accounting: The Basis for Business Decisions, 12th Edition, McGraw-Hill, Inc., New York, 2002.

Any edition of this textbook will be good, but the 12th edition is preferred. Used copies can be purchased through www.amazon.com or www.halfprice.com. It is a book you will want to bring with you to the USA.

If an application is not approved for the Accounting MBA program, can a student apply to the standard MBA or Ph.D. program?  Yes. Find information about these programs at the following links:
