Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then life gets complicated. The age-old plot comes freshly alive in the romantic drama Mary's Wedding by Stephen Massicotte and directed by Al Constantineau which opens this Friday for a month-long run in MUM's Sydney Spayde Theater.
Calgary playwright Stephen Massicotte's 80-minute, two-character play is set in Alberta, Canada in 1914 and through the World War I years. In this simple, moving dream of love and war, Mary Chalmers (Melanny Wells) journeys through time and memory to relive the meeting and courting of her true love, Charlie Edwards (Ben Estey). The entire play is a recurring dream that Mary has once again on the night before her wedding.
"Mary¹s Wedding is a reminder of the power of dreams, where we can watch over our loves from thousands of miles away, and say all the things we have always wanted to say. It¹s the kind of play that makes you think-and dream,"
says director Constantineau. "From my first reading of the script, I knew it would be a wonderful play for our Fairfield audience."
Mary's Wedding has had over 60 productions around the U.S. and Canada since it was a breakout hit in 2002. It won the 2000 Alberta Playwriting Competition, the 2002 Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play, and the 2003 Alberta Book Award for Drama.
The play will be performed on Fri-Sat Nov. 9-10, 16-17, 23-24 at 8:00 PM, with a matinee Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2:00 PM. There will be a post-show discussion with the actors and director on Sat. Nov. 24.
