About MUM
It's the University's explicit and unique mission to use the Transcendental Meditation technique to develop students' full potential from within.

Maharishi University of Management was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who brought the Transcendental Meditation technique to the modern world from the Vedic tradition of India, the world’s most ancient continuous tradition of knowledge. Since he began teaching in 1955, the Transcendental Meditation technique has become the most widely practiced, widely applied, and extensively validated procedure of personal development in the world.

The University’s mission centers around the Transcendental Meditation program because of the demonstrated benefits this program brings to education — to promote the growth of intelligence, creativity, moral development, learning ability, academic performance, balanced personality growth and wisdom, all on the basis of increasingly coherent brain functioning. (For an overview of the research, click here.)

Education until now has been information-based. At MUM we go beyond acquiring information by developing consciousness and brain functioning. This has been the missing element in education.

The University was founded to apply the approach of developing consciousness through the Transcendental Meditation program to education and to demonstrate its value through both practice and scientific research.

We at the University respect all traditions of knowledge. Every form of meditation and approach to personal development will produce some change in brain functioning (for research on TM compared to other meditation techniques, click here). But MUM is founded upon the unique approach of Consciousness-Based Education: practice of the TM technique along with the intellectual understanding of consciousness and higher states of consciousness that Maharishi has put forward in his Science of Consciousness.
Mission Statement
Maharishi University of Management was founded in 1971 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to fulfill the highest ideals of education. Foremost among these ideals is developing the full potential of consciousness in every student — to help students develop the ability to think and act in accord with the laws of nature and to live fulfilled and successful lives. This fulfills the long-sought goal of education: to produce fully developed individuals, citizens who can fulfill their own aspirations while promoting all good in society.

We have pioneered a unique system of higher education, Consciousness-Based Education℠, that systematically cultures students’ full creative intelligence, the basis of learning. Consciousness-Based education gives traditional academic study the foundation of complete knowledge of consciousness coupled with simple, natural, scientifically validated technologies for developing consciousness.

These technologies are the Transcendental Meditation® (TM) and the TM-Sidhi® programs, including Yogic Flying. This integrated approach develops students’ ability to manage their lives successfully, to grow steadily in health, happiness, and wisdom, and to achieve professional success and personal fulfillment.

Our unique educational programs fulfill a commitment to four broad areas of responsibility:

  •  Holistic development of students — cultivation of consciousness, mind, body, and behavior

  • Academic excellence — training at the forefront of knowledge in each discipline and in the ability to think critically and act effectively and ethically

  • Scholarship that expands the domains of knowledge, expressed in all four areas of scholarship — discovery, teaching and learning, integration, and application.

  • Improved quality of life for the individual, the community, the nation, and the world.
About the Founder

The founder of Maharishi University of Management was Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a Vedic sage. His message was that the purpose of life is the expansion of happiness, and that every human being can effortlessly unfold his or her infinite potential. The University got its institutional start in 1973. However, its origins began much earlier. (See article "About Maharishi")
